Cordless Lawnmowers Give FlexibilityFor many people mowing the lawn is a bit of a chore, and the last thing they want is to have a very heavy lawn mower which is difficult to push around. For this reason many people are looking at cordless lawnmowers, especially if they have a large lawn and it's difficult to stretch an electrical cord across a large lawn. These tend to be fairly lightweight mowers which can be moved very easily from one part of the lawn to the other. A cordless mower is essentially an electric mower which uses batteries rather than being powered from the mains, and for this reason it is extremely flexible and portable to almost any part of the garden. With most models now available, a cordless lawnmower will have rubber tires, a side discharge chute and an activation lever to turn the motor on and off, as well as having the usual safety switch that turns the mower off if a handle is released. But the main reason that many people choose this type of mower is due to the fact that, because they are cordless, there's no chance of cutting an electrical cord while mowing, something which many people are worried about. For this reason you can dispense with the usual circuit breaker that needs to be fitted to most cord mower types. Most cordless mowers also have a simple electrical start button which makes powering up the mower very easy indeed, and because they are usually lightweight they are also a good choice for older people or people who may have some kind of disability and therefore might not want the problem of moving a very heavy and large lawnmower around the garden. Petrol mower comparison This is one of the main advantages of a cordless type, especially in comparison to a petrol mower, which does tend to be very heavy, even though it may be more powerful and make get the job done more quickly. There is also the case that electric mowers, cordless or otherwise, will not produce any noxious fumes and there is no need to worry about fuel, or the mower running out of power half way through doing the job. Recharging batteries is usually fairly cheap, though it is usually a good idea to leave them on a charge overnight to make sure that the batteries are fully charged before starting to mow a lawn. It can also be the case that you will need to have a spare mower battery, which can be kept on the charger most of the time to ensure you will always have enough power. Mower battery life However, it is worth bearing in mind that a large cordless mower can sometimes be fairly heavy, and the extra weight can also cause the batteries to run out fairly quickly, which makes it even more essential that you make sure the batteries are always fully charged and that you have a spare available. Most batteries will need about 16 to 18 hours to charge fully, and that should be enough to do an average sized lawn. You also need to remember that most cordless lawnmowers tend to be small, and therefore not suited to mowing large areas of grass. Some cordless types that can be worthy of consideration include the Earthwise 20-Inch mower. Retailing at around $320.00, this mower has cutting heights from 1-3/4 inch to 3-3/4 inches, adjustable using a single height control lever. It comes with a mulch plug discharge chute for spreading cuttings, but also a grass catcher. There is safety blade control, an easy-fold handle and 7-inch front wheels and 9.5-inch rear wheels giving a 20-inch cutting width. The 24-volt battery is removable, while the steel cutting deck and large wheels make this a decent rough terrain mower. Mulching models Other models include the Black & Decker mulching lawn mower. The mower has a 19-inch cutting width, suitable for cutting up to 1/3 acre area, a mulch plate and mulch bag, and a rechargeable 24-volt lead acid battery. Battery recharge time is about 16 hours, and cutting heights vary from 1-1/2" to 3-1/2", with the mower costing about $370. ; For a cordless mower with a wide range of features, the Worx cordless mower with 24 volt removable battery can be a good choice. Cutting width is 19-inches, and a mulch bag is included along with side discharge option. Retailing at around $430, the grass catcher is 1.6 bushel, while the handle is adjustable and folds for compact storage. It has a 1.5' inch to 3.5' inch cutting height, and the battery will charge overnight. Small cordless mowers When it comes to choosing a cordless type the main thing to think about is how big the garden actually is, and make sure you choose a mower that can do the job effectively. It is no good choosing a small cordless lawnmower only to find that it takes a full day to do the job, and you also have to bear in mind that a large version may be too heavy for some people to handle, and it may be better in this case to buy a small petrol mower, which has the disadvantage of having to be refilled every few hours, but which will probably be able to do the job very quickly. Take time to look at some of the lawnmower suppliers that you can find online and take time to look at the various options before making your choice, especially in relation to price and the size and weight of the unit. |
