Riding Lawn Mowers Make The Job Easy

Having a large garden can be one of the great joys of life, since there really is nothing better than sitting on a patio on a summer's day and looking out over a wide expanse of grass, trees and bushes, resplendent in the summer heat. The problem comes, of course, when it is time to mow the lawn, because the large expanse of grass really can make a very big job.

Some people may hire a gardener to do it for them, but many others will still try to do the garden themselves, perhaps achieving a sense of satisfaction from knowing that everything is their own handiwork.

It is here that choosing the correct lawnmower is extremely important, because the wrong type could make the job difficult and a real burden, while the correct type can make the job very easy and can leave your lawn looking absolutely wonderful and very well-manicured. For those who have large expanses of grass to keep under control, domestic riding lawn mowers can be one of the best choices. It really does make mowing a large lawn very easy, and if you have a lawn that is bigger than a quarter of an acre or thereabouts this really should be the first choice for you, since it really will make lawn maintenance a job that you enjoy rather than looking at it as a chore.

Rotating blade systems

Most mowers of this type have horizontal rotating blade systems, usually with several blades which enable the lawn cutting movement to move in a very clean fashion. A small riding lawnmower is usually enough for most people, unless you are doing a lawn that is more than half an acre or so, in which case it can be an idea to go for one of the large types, including some of the large tractor lawnmowers. The engine for the small types are usually fitted in the rear, usually under the riders seat, though medium-size riding mowers, usually one with a high horsepower, will often have a front engine, usually of a fairly powerful capacity and enable you to mow a lawn of an acre or more within a few hours.

It goes without saying that the size of the lawn is one of the main considerations to be borne in mind when buying a riding mower, since this will affect the horsepower needed. You also need to think about the elevation of the lawn, since a sloping lawn may need a high horsepower mower but one that is essentially flat, for most residential lawns of less than half an acre, a riding mower of 17 to 25 hp is usually enough. You also need to pay attention to the turning radius, since if you have a lawn that is odd shaped, you may need to move the mower in and out of small spaces, and one with a small turning radius, perhaps even a zero turn mower, could be the choice for you. You also need to think about the blade sizes, since these will essentially give you the cutting width. For larger lawns a large cutting width is essential, as it will cut down on the time needed to finish the job.

Cutting rough grass

Most riding mowers are petrol types, since they need to have the power to move over large areas of land, and in most cases this power cannot be produced by batteries. For this reason there are few battery riding lawnmowers. The electric type does have the advantage that they are very quiet, though they are usually of a much lower power than the petrol variety. Overall, the advantage of a riding mower is that there is very little physical effort needed to actually mow the lawn, particularly in comparison to a push mower or a self-propelled mower, and even for a fairly small lawn it can be an idea to go for the riding type, particularly if you do not like physical effort. This can also be true if you have rough grass, since a riding mower will be able to deal with this easily and effectively.

One model worth consideration is the ZTR riding mower fromPoulan. Costing about $3,400, this is a 26 HP mower with Briggs & Stratton twin engine. The 54-inch cutting deck, gives a wide cutting sweep, while the adjustable 1.5 inch to 4.5 inch cutting height is enough for most heights of grass. It has a 3-gallon fuel tank, 11 inch front tires and 18 inch rear tires, along with electric start. The deck is 11-gauge steel. Other models include the Snapper AWS Series mower. This has a 46-inch cutting width deck and a 23 HP Briggs & Stratton engine. The small radius turn makes it ideal for tight corners, while the 2-gauge wheels, including 20-inch rear wheels, give good handling. Engine has cruise control, and the mower can mow in reverse. The mower retails for about $2,700.;

5-speed mowers

A popular model is the John Deere 42-inch riding mower. Retailing at about $1,500, it has a 19.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine, and comes with a wide range of accessories, including bagger and sun canopy. The unit is both a mulching mower and side discharge mower, but also has bagging options. The deck is 12-gauge steel, while the engine has a 5-Speed Transmission;

For those who do not want to spend too much money it can be possible to find a secondhand model, though you will still be looking at a thousand dollars or more in order to get one that is of sufficient quality. Take a look at some of the auction sites such as eBay, where you will find a fairly wide range of secondhand riding mowers, and possibly one that is just right for you. However, even a new riding mower can be worth the expense if you have a large garden, since the amount of time it will save, not to mention the fact that your lawn will be well tended is usually enough to justify the cost.
